Global music and media company NOMADIC WAX & public relations/music promoter THE BLOOM EFFECT have joined forces and will co-produce this year’s CMJ INTERNATIONAL HIP-HOP THROW-DOWN. The event will unite the talents of a creative and diverse group of lyricists and DJs from Africa, Korea, Canada, and Europe at club DROM, located at 85 Ave A in New York’s East Village on Thursday October 23rd 2008. The event will begin at 8 PM and will last until 3 AM and will feature live international hip-hop music and DJs spinning music.

The College Music Journal Marathon (CMJ) is New York’s largest music, film and media conference and will host hundreds of live performances, films, lectures and networking events. “CMJ is a perfect place for a global hip-hop event like this” said The Bloom Effect CEO, Fiona Bloom. “An event that unites MCs from a variety of backgrounds, countries and nationalities is exactly the kind of event that we want to be promoting at a global music conference like CMJ”.

The CMJ International Hip-Hop Throw-down has been building up for me since I’ve been very supportive of this genre and have made inroads bringing great talent to the U.S stages and now we bring it one step further to a bigger platform. A tremendous opportunity. To have an artist like Pharoahe host this event is such an honor and is testament to the fact that international hip-hop is becoming more accepted by the mainstream.” said Nomadic Wax founder Ben Herson.

This years event will feature a handful of rising stars including Blitz the Ambassador (Ghana), Drunken Tiger( Korea ), King Reign (Canada), Empire Isis (Canada), Chachi (Cape Verde) and Too Many Fish (France). Dj’s Boo and DJ Soulscape from Korea will be on the turntables. V.J Kwon from Korea will set the tone and visuals for the night. Blitz the Ambassador (who will be backed by a 10 piece band, “The Embassy Ensemble”) is no stranger to international hip-hop. Last year, Blitz headlined and hosted at the prestigious Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival, a three day global hip-hop event at Trinity College in Hartford CT.

“It’s incredible to see such diversity in an event like this” said Blitz. “To have artists from all over the world performing on the same stage together shows how global and powerful hip-hop culture has become”.

The showcase will end out with a party DJ line up of World Music Dj’s from various radio programs and entities. The party will go till 3am.

This years event will be sponsored by WNYE (New York Public Radio), Fusicology, World Hip-Hop Market, Remix Hotel, End of the Weak, The Flava(Worldspace), Popular Printing, The Hip-Hop Association and more TBA.

blitz.jpg Blitz The Ambassador (Ghana)
This multitalented lyricist/ producer/ film director was born and raised in Ghana. His first encounter with the emerging sounds of Hip-Hop came with KRS Ones “The Bridge is Over”. This early exposure set the tone for what was to become a childhood full of local MC battles, radio appearances and home grown popularity that could only come with the emergence of a young star. Fast forward to Brooklyn New York; immersed in the sights and sounds of Hip-Hop's home, Blitz honed his skills lyrically as an MC and crafting a unique sound, taking cues from such artists as Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Common – Blitz bridges the gap between the soulful sounds of the streets and politics. Blitz’s new studio album, Suicide Stereotype features emerging collaborators such as J.Ivy (as heard on Kanye West ‘s College Dropout), Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Rob Murat, indie rock band Mattison and producer Optiks. This diverse array of collaborator and creative partners has produced a genre-bending album that spans from the world of Afro-Hop, Progressive Rock, Jazz fusion and Soul.

isis.jpg Empire Isis (Montreal)
Nominated 11 times in 2008 for awards such as BEST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST & BEST NEW POP ARTIST, this North-African beauty defies all preconceived ideas of your typical Urban artist. Empire ISIS aka Empress Gangstress brings a new meaning to word "World Music" by breaking down the musical barriers and fusing Hiphop, Dancehall into a pop format on her new LP "Sound the Trumpets".

Half British half Moroccan but raised by a Ugandan stepfather who adopted her - Empire ISIS, grew up in different places such as Canada, the UK and Morocco. At the age 16, ISIS set off for South and Central America, bicycling through 7 countries from Panama to Mexico. Her adventures in Latin America ignited the spark that would forever change her. However, it was only until she went to the rolling hills of Jamaica that she truly found herself. While filming a documentary about the BoBo Shanti (an isolated group of strict Rastafarians) in the hills of Jamaica that gave birth to conscious dancehall pioneer Sizzla, ISIS realized being on stage and singing was her calling. ISIS put aside her camera, and picked up the mic. She set out on her most challenging journey: making conscious urban music for the masses. In sum, Empire ISIS brings a militant, passionate, and high energy type of reggae music which can be appreciated by all. From her unique look to her blazing lyrics, ISIS is a true provocateur challenging peoples perceptions, stereotypes and common modes of thinking.

reo.jpgMr.Reo (Haiti)
Mr. Reo, the consummate Haitian via Brooklyn rapper, uses his style to reflect his roots more than any grim urban reality. Born as Marlon Mayala in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Reo and his cousin Melange formed Vwala, a self described "hip-hop soul" outfit, and was quickly signed to Universal Records for a single deal. A slew of shows followed: a Vibe Magazine national tour, Marcus Garvey Park, 2001 Yardfest, SOB's and Downtime. Vwala's single "Say So" got radio spins from Florida to California. Reo recounts a TV appearance on Showtime at the Apollo Amateur Night, which ironically also signaled the end of the group. In February 2005, fellow Brooklyn house DJ Joeski released the track "Find a Way" featuring Reo on vocals to much critical acclaim. Currently Reo's polishing his debut EP "The Lure," featuring the track "Fanm Ayisyen" (Haitian Women), produced by the Haitian musical icon John "Papa Jube" Altino of Altino Productions, and featuring the well renowned singer Stanley "tantan" Toussaint.

djboo.jpgDJ BOO (NY)
Boo, born and raised in New York, had a strong affinity to all things rhythmic. From the 4th grade and throughout his high school years the drums were his means of musical expression. During this time he was introduced to the sounds of Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, and a daily dose of Hip-hop from Yo! MTV Raps. It was also during this time that his brother got his first set of turntables and Boo was then introduced to the fine art of DJ’ing. Throughout his college years he DJ’ed school events, house parties, and small events in Manhattan. Although he greatly enjoyed DJ’ing the use of the turntable as a viable means of musical expression never crossed his mind until he saw Roli Rho of The 5th Platoon performing a routine using duplicates of the 45 Kings “900 Number”. It was that performance that enabled him to see the turntables in a brand new light, and he spent countless hours relearning the craft. That time spent practicing and listening to music paid off and has led him down a path that has allowed him to share the stage with the likes of Kool G. Rap, Ghostface Killah, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Talib Kweli, Common, Uberzone, DJ Shortkut , and DJ Big Wiz to name a few. It has also allowed him to be involved with artists like Super Natural, Adagio, Consequence (of A Tribe Called Quest fame), Shamaji and Quannum recording artists ApSci (Applied Science). Boo is currently working with The Juggaknots, Koba, Taiyo Na and Nomadic Wax’s Global Underground All-Stars. He has been a guest teacher at New York’s Scratch Academy, and has done demonstrations for Rane/Serato Scratch Live.
