NYC Artivist Eljuri Launches Voter Registration Initiative
in partnership with HeadCount, Every Vote Counts, and Spread the Vote
New York-based guitarist, singer, and composer Eljuri has long entwined her music and her social activism, hence the term “artivist” as she has been described. She’s also been called “a rockstar humanitarian” whose bilingual songs are about resilience, immigration issues, gender equality, gun control, the environment, and social justice. And they rock!
Eljuri (Cecilia Villar Eljuri) was born in Ecuador to Spanish and Lebanese parents but grew up in New York City. Her music and her guitar virtuosity are widely acclaimed; her sound has been described as “Manu Chao and Bob Marley meet Carlos Santana” as she fuses elements of rock, funk, reggae, Middle Eastern music, and Afro Cuban rhythms, the sounds of the rich melting pot that is New York City — and America. Her music has been featured in five films, 20 internationally-syndicated TV shows, and over 50 TV shows across the Americas.
England’s Songlines magazine said, “She writes tight, concise songs and sings them distinctively…and plays a razor-sharp guitar. The energy she generates can be positively breathtaking. Cecilia Villar Eljuri is not an artist to be ignored.”
ELJURI CONCERTS FOR DEMOCRACY: AMPLIFYING VOICES FOR SOCIAL CHANGE, is a project that will bring Eljuri’s live concert and workshop series to key U.S. cities this summer and fall, with a focus on encouraging audiences to find and use their voices toward positive change, and most critically to register and vote in this year’s elections. To this end, Eljuri is collaborating with three national voting partners — HeadCount.org, Every Vote Counts (evcnational.org), and SpreadTheVote.org — which will have a hands-on, bilingual presence at the events, helping drive voter registration among young and old, particularly in marginalized communities who are new to the U.S. or feel disempowered and under-represented.
Eljuri has successfully staged concert/workshop presentations in New York City, Bogota, Mexico City, and Ontario, with dazzling performances by her trio. Upcoming 2024 Eljuri Concerts for Democracy events include the following appearances, with more to be announced:
July 13 – Levitt Vibe Belmont Cragin Music Series /Chicago IL
September 15 – 4th Annual LatinX Festival/Hudson NY
September 21 – Circulo de la Hispanidad Center/Hempstead NY
September 26 – Eljuri Concerts for Democracy Fundraiser/New York NY
“The goal of this project is to attract and unite communities through the power of live music, to inspire and empower people to recognize and use their voice,” says Eljuri. “You have the right to vote, to express yourself at your kitchen table, church coffee hour, parents’ night at school, community board meeting — and in a national election.
Your individual voice is your power.”
