Description
Sertab Erener (born December 4, 1964, in Istanbul) is a celebrated Turkish singer, songwriter, and composer, renowned for her powerful coloratura soprano voice and genre-blending artistry.
Born into a musically inclined family in Istanbul, Sertab studied classical music at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Despite early struggles transitioning to pop from her operatic training, she eventually embraced mainstream music to reach wider audiences, drawing on both Western and Eastern musical traditions. She began her professional journey as a backing vocalist for the legendary Sezen Aksu before launching her solo career in the early 1990s.
Her debut album, Sakin Ol! (1992), was a major success in Turkey, followed by Lâ’l (1994) and Sertab Gibi (1997), all setting her status as a leading figure in Turkish pop with multiple chart-topping hits. After consistent domestic success, her self-titled album Sertab Erener arrived in 1999, further cementing her popularity at home and in parts of Europe.
In 2003, Sertab represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest with the English-language track “Everyway That I Can”, earning 167 points and securing Turkey’s first-ever victory in the competition. The song topped charts in Greece, Sweden, and Turkey, launched her into the wider European music scene, and led to the release of her first English-language album, No Boundaries (2004).
Following No Boundaries, she released several acclaimed albums: Aşk Ölmez (2005), Rengârenk (2010), Ey Şûh‑i Sertab (classical Turkish repertoire dedicated to her father, 2012), Sade (2013), Kırık Kalpler Albümü (2016), Ben Yaşarım (2020), Her Dem Yeşil (2023), and Her Dem Akustik (2024)
